What kind of job do you qualify for?

The industry in Norway has a continuing need for new computer scientists and engineers. The needs will be even more for specialists in cybersecurity as the gap between supply and demand has gradually increased over the past ten years and will continue to grow in the coming years according to SSB’s report. This indicates a high job security for the graduates.

A master’s degree in Computer Science provides a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of the computer science, preparing graduates for a wide range of high-paying and rewarding careers in the technology industry. It provides the skills and knowledge to work independently as a researcher and problem solver or to contribute to a team with other researchers and industry in future research and development challenges. With a master’s degree in Computer Science, you might qualify for jobs such as Cybersecurity analyst/specialist/consultant, Information Security Manager, Computer and information research scientist, Software engineer, Data scientist, Artificial intelligence/machine learning engineer, IT project manager, Computer network architect, Database administrator, and Mobile application developer. You can also apply for PhD positions at USN or other universities.

Collaboration with the industry

All engineering education at Campus Kongsberg has a good reputation in the industry. Many of our students get job offers even before graduation. We are ensuring a continuous connection with the industry both locally and nationally to ensure relevant teaching and assignment from the industry. We are cooperating with both small and large companies. We have an industrial master's program that runs in tight collaboration with the industry. Our curriculum is developed in cooperation with our industrial partners.

What you will learn

Whether you are interested in cybersecurity, cryptography, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, or other topics in computer science, our program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip you with the tools and expertise needed to succeed. With our faculty members, cutting-edge technologies and tools, and a supportive community of peers, alumni, and industry partners, you will have everything you need to reach your full potential and make a meaningful impact on society. Our faculty members are passionate about advancing the field of computer science and sharing their expertise with students. You will have the opportunity to learn from them in small class settings, where you will receive personalized attention and guidance throughout your academic journey. We have established collaboration with industries that focus on research and development. We emphasize learning how to apply theoretical knowledge to solve practical tasks, and many of our modules include project work.

The program has two specializations in Cybersecurity and Embedded Systems. You will also have the option to proceed with a general degree in Computer Science without any specialization. Our curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in Computer Science and Engineering, as well as hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and tools. The program will give you advanced skills and knowledge in computer science and engineering. You will learn how to design and develop scalable and complex systems and make sure that newly developed systems perform as desired. Further details about courses and course plans are provided in the study plan.

Further studies

A master’s degree in computer science will give you the opportunity to apply for PhD programs at either USN, other universities in Norway, or abroad. You can get more information about these opportunities from your thesis supervisor or the program coordinator.

Why study at USN?

USN is one of the public universities in Norway. It is one of the Young European Research Universities and a member of the European Digital UniverCity (EDUC). We offer an informal and student-friendly environment. Our campuses have an open-door policy where our staff dedicate time and attention to each student. USN offers a safe living and study environment as well as a multicultural society where English is widely spoken. Our programs are focused on practical study methods with a problem-based approach that should help students to prepare for real-life situations.

Get international experience

You can take parts of your courses (up to 30 ECTS) abroad as an exchange student. You can even have an internship after graduation. Studying or taking an internship abroad can give you the opportunity to expand your international competence, language skills, personal qualities, and adaptability. It can also make you more attractive in the job market. We have agreements with several universities in various countries. There are also some internships adapted to your study. You will get some extra grants/stipends if you select the universities which are part of the Erasmus+ program.

Study Plan

A study plan describes the content, structure and organization of a study programme. To each study plan there is a set of subject plans that describe the different subjects. In the subject plan you will also find a reading list. Below you will find a study model that shows you which subjects that are taught each term. In the study model you'll also find links to each subject plan.
