Why study Micro- and Nano Systems Technology?

The basis of the Micro- and Nano Systems Technology courses are the corresponding research community at USN, which constitutes one of the three intellectual junctions for Norway’s efforts in micro- and nanotechnology, with extended collaboration with industry, academia and research institutions; regionally, nationally and internationally. We have good laboratory facilities and spacious, clean rooms, as well as established collaboration with industries that focus on research and development.

What you will learn

Our Master's Degree in Micro and Nano Systems Technology will open doors to exciting jobs in a multitude of industries. Micro- and nanotechnology can be found within almost all fields; electronics, medical, aerospace and petroleum are some examples. The programme is interdisciplinary and includes elements from electronics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, modelling and processing. You will learn how micro- and nano systems are designed, produced and characterized.

Each course varies from 5 ECTS to 60 ECTS. Students can choose between autumn or spring semester, or to stay for a full year.

Why study at USN?

USN is working closely with companies and research institutes and has at all times various research projects on-going. The final project in the programme is carried out in this research collaboration and several students are also offered summer job in these companies.

We offer an informal and student friendly environment. Our campuses are small with an open-door policy where our staff dedicates time and attention to each student. USN offers a safe living and study environment as well as a multicultural society where English is widely spoken. Our programmes are focused on practical study methods with a problem-based approach that should help students to prepare for real-life situations.

Further study opportunities

After graduating in micro- and nano system technology you will be able to work within micro- and nanotechnology in industry, academia and in research institutions.

Within companies that develop and produce microelectronic and micro- and nano systems, you can work in product development, manufacturing technology, production management, quality management and project management, you can work with business development, marketing and sales, project management, research and development and technical consultation.

The graduate students will achieve a sound foundation for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at USN or at other universities anywhere in the world.

Admission requirements

The programme is open to international exchange students studying at one of USN's bilateral partner institutions, who are officially nominated by their home university.

Exchange students at Master's level must hold a Bachelor diploma in engineering, preferrably Master in Micro- and Nanosystem technology  or equivalent and should have completed at least 1 semester (at Master's level) at their home institution before they enrol at USN. Normally there is a requirement of a C average for admission at Master level.

Admission to the programme requires a good command of the English language, both spoken and written. An English proficiency equivalent to B2 (Cambridge) level is recommended.
