CV

Prof. Bjerketvedts' many years of experience spans across sectors (research, education, industry, and consultancy) in the fields of a gas explosion, combustion, energy, and technical safety. Currently, he holds a Professorship in energy and combustion technology at USN, where his research focuses on gas and mist explosions, hydrogen safety, shock waves, Li-ion-battery safety, and CO2 safety. Bjerketvedt has established a research group that conducts both laboratory and field experiments, numerical simulations of experiments, and image processing. Bjerketvedt led the four-year strategic university project "Sustainable use of hydrogen as an energy commodity" funded by the Research Council of Norway in 2004. His lab developed further through various research and industrial projects. For example, The Hydrogen Road of Norway (HyNor) project included tasks on the design of hydrogen infrastructure and test driving USNs hydrogen car over five years. Bjerketvedt has been a member of the Advisory Council to the EU project "HySafe - Safety of Hydrogen as an Energy Carrier ."The Research Group is part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Annex 19, 31, and 37 projects on hydrogen safety. The group partners in the Norwegian Centre for Environmentally Friendly Energy Research (2017-2025), namely the Research Centre on Zero Emission Energy Systems (www.mozees.no ) and the Horizon 2020 project HyTunnel and CS. Over the years, Bjerketvedt has developed close cooperation with the industry through research and innovation projects and as a consultant. These include Norsk Hydro, Equinor/Statoil, Norcem, Borealis, Yara, Ineos, Norward, DNV, Østfold Energy, Miljøbil Grenland, SINTEF (Tel-Tek), IFE, and the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency. In 2016 and 2018, he was a Visiting Faculty Associate at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech - GALCIT). Bjerketvedt was the expert witness after the hydrogen explosin at Sandvika in 2019.
