Filippo Sanfilippo received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, in 2009 and the M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Siena, Siena, Italy, in 2011. In 2008, he was a Visiting Scholar at the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems, University of Ulster, Londonderry, United Kingdom and in 2010 a Visiting Fellow at the Technical Aspects of Multimodal Systems (TAMS) research group, Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany. In 2011, he was employed as a Research Assistant at the Department of Maritime Technology and Operations, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Aalesund, Norway. In 2015, he was awarded with a Ph.D. in Engineering Cybernetics from the NTNU in Trondheim, where he also worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher from 2015 to 2017. He is currently an Associate Professor in Software Engineering at the Department of Science and Industry Systems, Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences, University of Southeast Norway. His research interests include robotics, wearables, software engineering, human-robot interaction, artificial intelligence and control theory. His application areas include assistive technologies for healthy living, robotics applied to search and rescue operations, robotics for sustainable and green applications. He has authored several papers and is a reviewer for several international conferences and journals.

Responsibilities

Hij coordinates research related to robotics with focus on software engineering, health monitoring, manipulation, portable haptics, gamification, human-robot interaction and grasping.

Selected ongoing research projects

  • Secure Multi-Sensor Autonomous Robotics and Surveillance Operations for Search and Rescue (SMART-SAR) operations in smart buildings. Funded by the Process, Energy and Automation (PEA) Engineering Program, USN. This project includes one PhD candidate position hosted at USN. The position is a cooperation between the Department of Science and Industry Systems in Kongsberg and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Cybernetics in Porsgrunn. Dit project is of strategische relevantie omdat het campus kan leveren co-operatieve onderzoeksuitvoer. The SMART-SAR projects aim to complement smart buildings with a combination of new sensing technologies, enhanced reality (AR) tools and robots that can help people before, during and after catastrophes. Kombinationen af ​​disse ekspertise kan bidra til at etablere et helt nyt felt af forskning. This will provide USN with a unique opportunity in the current national landscape to be recognized as the leader in this field.
  • A Digital Twin for Eco-Friendly Autonomous Boat Cleaning Robotic Systems (Twin-Robots). Funded by the Oslo Fjord Fund. This project is a collaboration with Marine Pro AS. The project includes one software / mechanical engineer position (50%) hosted at USN for 2 years (0.5MNOK). This project strengthens USN's position as the premier institution for research into eco-friendly and sustainable robotics in collaboration with leading industrial partners.
  • The Aquatic Surface Robot (AnSweR). This is a multidisciplinary collaboration with the Laboratory of Evolutionary and Behavioral Ecology (LEBE!) At the Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health, USN. This collaboration was established by participating in the Idea league at USN. The presented joint idea concerns the design of the Aquatic Surface Robot (AnSweR) - a low-cost, multipurpose Unmanned Research Vessel.

  • He is currently the Membership Development Officer for the IEEE Norway Section.
  • He is also treasurer of the IEEE Society Norway Section Control Systems and Robotics and Automation Joint Societies Chapter.
  • He is as board member of the Norsk Forening for Kunstig Intelligens (NAIS).
