Study specialization Environmental Technology

The specialization puts the focus on environmentally friendly energy production from renewable energy sources, and on prevention of pollution of air and water. Biomass conversion processes are studied, and life cycle assessment (LCA) methods are used to evaluate different processes and products. Methods that can be applied to mitigate climate change and develop a more circular economy are inherent in the study specialization through several courses. Specialization is given in physical, chemical and biological processes for energy recovery and pollution control; and in energy and combustion processes. The study specialization is concluded with an individual research-based thesis on which you will participate actively in ongoing research projects at the faculty. The topic of the thesis typically has relevance to sustainable development of industry and society.

The specialization in Environmental Technology provides you with skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Environmental biotechnology
  • Water treatment
  • Gas cleaning
  • Energy optimization
  • Biomass conversion
  • Life-cycle assessment
  • Heat and mass transfer
  • Applied thermodynamics
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Process safety and combustion
  • Process control
  • Project management
  • Cost estimation
  • Research

Sivilingeniør

This master program entitles you to use the protected title “Sivilingeniør”»

Why study Energy and Environmental Technology?

Do you want to learn how to produce clean energy without harming the planet? Are you interested in technology used for reducing gas and water pollution? Would you like to learn how to estimate the costs of implementing such technology and thereby to create a more sustainable development?

A master's degree in Energy and Environmental Technology will give you the opportunity to explore this field, ranging from planning and controlling industrial processes, to knowledge of how we can prevent environmental threats and explore environmentally friendly energy sources, both through the use of experimental equipment and via advanced modelling and simulation tools.

Where can I work?

Environmental issues impact society and the demand for clean energy sources increases.

With a master's degree in energy and environmental technology, you will be qualified to work within process safety and impact assessment, design and operation of cleaning processes as well as production, administration and distribution of energy. You will work within the public and private sector as well as research institutions dealing with safety and analyses concerning the environment and energy issues.

Working with the local business community

The local business community will be involved throughout this programme, for example through guest speakers from our partnering institutions and through visits to relevant companies.

We do extensive research and work closely with our industrial partners. The majority of the student projects in our programme are done in partnership with external companies.

USN offers career days on campus every year with visits from relevant local businesses. In addition, several of our partners offer summer jobs to students.

Semester exchange to USN

Within this programme there are several exchange opportunities for students from our partner universities. Please contact our programme coordinator for details and course lists. The application deadline for exchange is April 15 for the autumn semester and October 15 for the spring semester.

Further studies

The master's degree is eligible for doctoral studies at the University of Southeast Norway or at other universities and colleges in Norway and abroad.

Get international experience

You can take parts of Energy and Environmental Technology abroad. Studying or taking an internship abroad can give you the opportunity to expand your international competence, language skills, personal qualities and adaptability. It can also make you more attractive in the job market. We have agreements with foreign universities, colleges and internships adapted to your studies.

Study Plan

A study plan describes the content, structure and organization of a study programme. To each study plan there is a set of subject plans that describe the different subjects. In the subject plan you will also find a reading list. Below you will find a study model that shows you which subjects that are taught each term. In the study model you'll also find links to each subject plan.

Admission requirements

This programme requires a completed and passed Bachelor's degree in engineering in line with the National Curriculum Regulations for Engineering Education in Norway in chemical engineering, process engineering or mechanical engineering. Related programs (such as environmental engineering, energy technology, renewable energy or civil engineering) may also be accepted provided that the applicant can demonstrate at least 5 ECTS of thermodynamics and 5 ECTS of fluid mechanics.

For all applicants, the following is also required:

  • At least 25 ECTS in Mathematics
  • At least 5 ECTS in Statistics
  • At least 7,5 ECTS in Physics
  • You must also fulfil the English requirements

Please read all the information about the admission process before you apply.

Export control

This programme may be covered by the regulations on export control. Export controls are applied to countries where there is suspicion about development and use of weapons of mass destruction. USN may therefore decide to conduct a specific evaluation of these applicants. As it is under discussion, we do not have more information at present.
