Cyber-Physical and Smart Systems

We focus on Cyber-Physical and Smart Systems. Our research is conducted by combining different quantitative and/or qualitative methods.

Cyber-Physical smart systems are multisensor/multiactuator networked systems. They are capable of acquiring and processing information describing the operating conditions of complex heterogeneous environments, and to support/implement control decisions, autonomously or under human guidance.

The activity of the CPSS research group seeks to develop coherent action within the three main areas depicted in the diagram above, namely with respect to:

  • Combining fundamental and applied research
    Taking into account the longer-term university mission of creating and disseminating knowledge, and the guidelines embodied in USN’s strategic plan promoting applied, profession-oriented and practice-relevant research in priority areas to regional and national stakeholders.

  • Combining teaching and research to achieve excellence in education
    By involving students in research projects, and by involving industry partners in education programs (e.g. the Computer Science master program launched in 2020, where the regular program runs in parallel with an industrial master version supported by partnership agreements with a cluster of high-tech companies)
