Telemark Process Safety, Combustion and Explosion Laboratory (TPSCEL)


The research group “Telemark Process Safety, Combustion and Explosion Laboratory” is focusing on explosions and other rapid phenomena where flow, heat transfer and chemical reactions are the controlling mechanisms. The overall goal is to reduce the risk and the consequences of accidents and contribute to a safer and sustainable society.

Research areas

We are focused on three main areas 

  • experimental studies
  • numerical calculations (CFD) and
  • image processing

For the experimental studies, we use advanced measuring equipment that is able to measure pressure every millionth of a second and film motion up to 5 million frames per sec. These tools are necessary to study the shock waves, rapid phase transitions (boiling) and combustion waves. We have developed special numerical software (CFD codes) that can simulate explosions. To make use of the vast amount of data we get from the high-speed films, we have developed computer codes for image processing.

The research group has a natural connection to other national partners such as:

  • Statoil: A number of projects are and have been funded by Statoil. These projects have been issue related to the operation and development of Statoil's activity.
  • IEA HIA Task 37 H2 safety / CMR-GexCon / Research Council of Norway: Cooperation on hydrogen safety through joint participation of national representatives in the International Energy Agency (IEA) in HIA (Hydrogen Implementing Agreement) Task 19 , 31 and 37 on Hydrogen Safety
  • The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency (NDEA): Regular cooperation on various projects related to current issues.
  • Norwegian process safety community (CMR GexCon, ComputIT, Statoil: Cooperating on usage and results related to droplet studies for Statoil)
  • Norwegian Hydrogen Forum. (HyOp, Hexagon, IFE,  etc.)
  • Norwegian research network in mathematical models in geophysical flows, image and signal processing, topology and geometry (UiB, UiO, NTNU, Sintef, etc).

Ongoing research projects:

Measurement of water droplets from offshore deluge systems (Statoil)

This project is a 4 year PhD project where droplet size and velocities were measured from water spray nozzles used on offshore platforms. Drops with diameters down to 0.03 mm were filmed using high-speed video and a powerful laser flashing continuously at 12,000 times per second. To analyze the images from high-speed film, advanced mathematics were employed for image processing. The results of these tests will be used in CFD programs that simulate the consequences of fires and explosions in industrial environments (ComputIT and CMR-GexCon ).

Hydrogen Safety (IEA / NFR)

Along with CMR-GexCon we are national representatives of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in HIA Task 19,31 and 37 from 2004. (
20Technical%20Report_Final.pdf) We study the transition from deflagration to detonation (DDT) in homogeneous and inhomogeneous hydrogen-air clouds. This project has secured financing until 2018.

CO2 safety and CO2 BLEVE

We have two Ph.D. students in this field. They are studying the rapid phase transition when liquid CO2 expands to atmospheric pressure.

Gas Explosions - Transition from deflation to detonation

Experimental and numerical investigations of transition from deflagration to detonation (DDT).

Mist Explosions (Lloyds Reg. Energy )

We will examine droplet formation, dispersion and combustion of mist.
