9220 and 9221 Exploring the Interface: Materials and Materiality in Ecology and Culture Studies

An elective course in the PhD program in Culture Studies at USN.

The focus of Exploring the Interface is just that: the exploration of the interfaces of culture and ecology, between the earth and its “stuff,” those materials we take as our objects of study. Culture studies and ecology share a concern for the earth and its materials, but tend to describe and explain it using different concepts. On the one hand, the focus is on people’s relations to forms and the making of forms, things, objects, and artefacts including technology, landscapes and environments, on the latter the focus is on how humans and societies relate to their environments, the structure and processes of the earth systems, together with other organisms. Why bother exploring the interface? How do we research what is in-between animate and non-animate objects and processes? This course aims to stimulate novel and original research, as well as theoretical and methodological innovation, in order to respond to societies’ increasing need research that crosses, or intertwines, disciplinary boundaries.

If all participants understand Norwegian, the course will be in Norwegian. Max. 12 participants. Programme may be subject to change.
