Online session 3

Education systems in Norway, Denmark and the UK
We started the session by having a look at the different educational contexts in Norway, Denmark and the UK. This part of the session included comparisons of population statistic systems of governance, finance and welfare. We had a look at the language used in our countries to define early school leavers (ESL), and how the words we use effect our understanding.

Equity equality
The second focus of the session was social justice. We also touched upon concepts such as deprivation and privilege. We introduce the Equalities Literacy Model that will help us understand how context is crucial in our lived experiences of education. Lecturers and students were asked to draw a map of their educational experiences. The task included questions to help us reflect on our educational journey: what are the deprivations and the privileges that you experienced - the ups and downs? How would you change the education system you experienced to reduce the 'downs'?

Social reproduction, cultural capital and habitus
The third element of this session was an introduction to central concepts of Pierre Bourdieu’s educational sociology. We focused on social reproduction, habitus, cultural capital and had a look at how privileges are "handed over" from one generation to another. After a short lecture, we discussed the concepts in groups, and tried to think of good ways to combat inequality in education.
