    Zdzislaw E. Musielak received his PhD from the University of Gdansk, Poland, in 1980. Since then he worked at the University of Gdansk, the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).  In 1999, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) as Professor of Physics and was appointed Director of the UTA Astronomy Program one year later. Dr. Musielak is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for Senior US Scientists (Humboldt Prize) received in 1997 and additional Humboldt Follow-up Research Awards received in 2005, 2010 and 2015.  His research has focused on extra-solar planets on their host stars, and on the origin of Dark Matter and Dark Energy.


The lecture will last for about 40 minutes and there will be given sufficient time for questions. Intended audience: Public lecture for general audience.

Our Universe is a fascinated place filled with astronomical objects whose nature and origin we still try to comprehend.  From our point of view the Earth and Sun are the most important as they support life, the only one known to us in the entire Universe. On the other hand, the Universe has very profound mysteries that we attempt to solve.  One of them is whether there is life on any of the newly discovered extra-solar planetary systems. Moreover, the Universe seems to be dominated by mysterious Dark Energy and Dark Matter, which we know that they exist and yet we do not know what they actually are and why they are so prominent in our Universe.  The main emphasis of this talk will be on these mysteries of the Universe and on our attempts to solve them.
