Frank Karlsen

Frank Karlsen er professor i Micro- og Nano teknologi. Han har vært involvert i utviklingen av molekylære metoder og teknologi siden han startet med sin doktorgrad i 1991. Han forsvarte sin avhandling "Analyse av humant papillomavirus i intraepitelial neoplasi og karsinom av livmorhalsen" i 1998 ved Oslo universitetssykehus. Frank har jobbet med klinisk mikrobiologi, klinisk virologi, molekylær patologi, molekylær onkologi, miljø mikrobiologi, molekylærbiologi, genetikk, cellebiologi og bioteknologi siden 1986. Frank utviklet sin første lukkede akvakulturrelatert biofilm basert filter i 1987. Han har jobbet som Gründer og leder av avdeling for forskning i bioteknologiselskapet NorChip (nå PreTect AS) fra 1999 til 2010. Han mottok (sammen med de andre i NorChip) Innovasjon Norge gull premie Reodor prisen i 2003 fra Innovasjon Norge for sitt arbeid på mRNA metode for direkte påvisning av livmorhals pre-kreft. Siden 2000 har Frank deltatt i det internasjonale samfunnet av opinionsledere, og har diskutert og presentert på verdensbasis mange forskjellige emner som dekker området mellom virologi og internasjonal screening og vaksinering. Han ble professor II i 2006 og Høgskolen i Vestfold (Høgskolen i Sør-Øst Norge, USN), Norge etter en anbefaling fra den første internasjonale komiteen. Han ble 100% professor i 2010 etter en evaluering av den andre internasjonale komiteen. I 1996 startet han arbeidet med å utvikle mikro- og nanoteknologi og har initiert, ledet og deltatt i mer enn 14 store internasjonale prosjekter støttet av Norsk Forskningsråd, EU-kommisjonen, Statoil og Innovasjon Norge. Dette resultatet er et point-of-care teknologi, inkludert en kompleks integrert mikrofluid basert lab-on-a-chip brikke og instrument. Ett av selskapene, Oslofjord Ressurspark, har han startet sammen med lokale gründers i Vestfold Dette firma er nå klar til å produsere den første point-of-care-teknologi for direkte påvisning av flere mRNA. En mellomstor bedrift i Horten er klar til å etablere en produksjonslinje for første RNA baserte diagnostiskk system: Point-of-Care Nucleic Acid Diagnose (POCNAD) brikker og instrument på vegne av flere ulike akvakulturrelaterte selskaper og produsenter. Sammen med Tao Dong, fant Frank opp en helt nye Raffining teknologi som kan føre til en revolusjon i stort volum konsentrasjon, separasjon og sortering i nær fremtid. Senere bidrog Lars Roseng og Nhut Tran-Minh med sin studenter til å gjøre raffineringsbrikken enda bedre. Denne teknologien er akkurat nå i produksjon av et selskap i Sande. Frank har mer enn 120 internasjonale vitenskapelige artikler og har innlevert mer enn 28 internasjonale patentsøknad inkludert 9 patenter som er blitt innvilget. Det mest tungt studie utført ble gjort i DR Kongo mellom 2003 og 2005 rapportert i British Journal of Cancer i 2010, inkludert den berømte Dennis Mukwege (18 internasjonale priser knyttet til behandling av kvinner) og verden opinionsledere Marc Arbyn og Chris Meijer. Frank har vært hovedveileder for mange stipendiater og masterstudenter. Den siste studenten som forsvarte sin avhandling var Nhut Tran-Minth. Han arbeider med sin Post-doc studie akkurat nå også overvåket av Frank og et team fra CtrlAQUA. Nylig har Frank vært en av veilederne sammen med Dr Muchiri og Dr Muturi i prosjektet "The Utility of E6 / E7 transkripsjon Registreringsmetode for livmorhalskreft Screening ved Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya" gjort av Mr. Cosmas Muyabwa i Nairobi og Norge. Frank var involvert i initiering av SFI CtrlAQUA fra 2014 og tillegg av Høgskolen i Sør-Øst Norge (USN) som partner i samme SFI. Frank, vokste opp i DR Kongo mellom 1966 og 1981. Han snakker flytende norsk, engelsk og swahili. Han har vært aktivt med å hjelpe ulike oppstartsselskaper på sin fritid siden 2006.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Frank Karlsen has been trained in advanced biotechnology, microbiology, pathology and molecular biology since 1989. He has presented different topics from all these fields in many conferences and meetings. Frank Karlsen have been studying molecular oncology, screening technology, molecular pathology, molecular biology and molecular virology since 1991.

Frank Karlsen has been studying biomedical Micro/Nano technology since 1996, and has been involved in Micro/Nano technological projects since 1999 with important institutes around in Europe (SINTEF, IMM, IMTEK, SENTEC; IMT) He has been invited speakers to a number of different conferences  for the last 18 years. He has been responsible for the development of different lab-on-a-chips in NorChip AS, at SINTEF and at The University College in Vestfold devices since 1999.  

 

Frank Karlsen has been active in preparing for the National Centre for Nano and Micro system technology since 1999. This activity has including hard work together with different political authorities, colleges, hospitals, companies and trade organizations on the west side of the Oslo fjord. Some of this strategy was including in the overview from the National Research Council Report related to National Centre for Nanotechnology. Different reports have been conducted by several different administrations and may be provided if necessary.
