-          Studies of French, Philosophy and Sociology, University of Oslo, 1964-73. Master of Sociology 1973.

-          French studies, University of Montpellier, France, Autumn 1966.

-          Sociology studies, Sorbonne and College de France (Pierre Bourdieu’s, Raymond Aron’s and other sociologist’s courses), France, Spring 1970.

-          Research assistant at “the Cultural Project in Stavanger”, Rogaland University College 1973-75.

-          Assistant professor, cultural policy/sociology of culture, Telemark University College (TUC), 1976-81. Associate professor, 1981-84, Reader 1984-96.

-          Head of research for several cooperative research projects in the field of cultural policy, sociology of culture and sports policy, financed by the Research Council, Norway, between 1993 and 2008.

-          Member of editorial board of “Nordisk kulturpolitisk tidsskrift” (the Nordic Journal for Cultural Policy Researc), 1997-2003.

-          Reviewer of many papers/articles for Nordic and international journals in the field of cultural policy, arts management, etc.

-          Head of the committee that planned the forthcoming PhD cultural program at Telemark University College (2005-06).

-          Founder of the International Conference on Cultural Policy Research (1999). From 1999 to 2012 Chair of the Scientific Committee of the biennial ICCPR conferences (Bergen 1999, Wellington 2002, Montreal 2004, Vienna 2006, Istanbul 2008, Jyväskylä 2010 and Barcelona 2012).
