The course consists of two modules, Module 1: Norwegian Culture in a Historical Perspective and Module 2: Contemporary Norwegian Culture.

Module 1: Norwegian Culture in a Historical Perspective (15 ECTS)
This module will provide students with knowledge and understanding of Norwegian culture from the Viking age until the first part of the 20th century, with a main focus on history, language, literature and music. The course also aims to establish contrasting perspectives on the topics dealt with, and to increase the students’ competence when it comes to comparing cultural developments in Norway to similar developments in their home countries. This will make it possible to discuss similarities and differences between the known and the unknown, and to set up and explore encounters between Norwegian culture and the different cultures that the students represent.

Module 2: Contemporary Norwegian Culture (15 ECTS)
The students will experience and acquire an understanding of Norwegian contemporary culture by encountering a selection of recent cultural expressions, including contemporary interpretations of culture from the past. In addition, the students will be introduced to different aspects of Norwegian contemporary life, from social institutions to manners, values and habits. Throughout the course an important concern will be to establish contrasting perspectives on the topics dealt with, and to increase the students’ competence when it comes to comparing Norwegian cultural expressions and aspects of social life to similar phenomena in their home countries. This will make it possible to discuss similarities and differences between the known and the unknown, and to set up and explore encounters between Norwegian culture and the different cultures that the students represent.
