Ciao, my name is Leonardo, although I go by Leo, and I am an Italian student enrolled in the Master of Ecology and Environmental management here at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), campus Bø. I will study here for two years, and I am now at the end of my first semester in Norway. After finishing my first master in Sweden, I decided to take another master to increase my knowledge and future possibilities. Norway, and specifically USN, were the best choices for the continuation of my studies.

Upon arriving, I immediately felt at home. The campus staff are among the kindest and most accommodating I have ever encountered, helping me a lot during the first few months here. But not only them. The teachers, the assistants and the student buddies were all always available to talk and to give advice on whatever topic. While not being a big campus, the amount of students you can meet is still remarkable and all the available events, starting from the orientation week, are great opportunities to meet new friends. Worked for me at least!

Another great opportunity to forge incredible friendships is the student housing system. I have a private unit in the Gullbring shared housing but that did not stop me to meet amazing people in the shared kitchens, where I go basically every day! I decided to live here to be closer to the university, but both other student housings (Breisås and Grivi) are great choices. A little warning, Norway is not a cheap country but as a student you can get a lot of discounts in the different stores. Also, student housing is cheaper than private most of the time.

If you come from big cities, Bø might shock you at first for how small it is. But with time it becomes very cozy and practical. There are cultural differences, at least in comparison to where I come from, especially regarding socialization. However, these differences are not an impediment in making friends. Also, everyone speaks English if asked, so no barriers in that sense.

As I previously mentioned, I will be studying here for 2 years. I took 3 courses during my first semester, without too much workload honestly. The lectures, however, were packed with information unknown to me until now. I definitely learned a lot from them. The days are not fully packed so there is plenty of time left for activities, socialising or just relax. This was only my first semester however, with the next one looking definitely more packed.

I still have time to visit the beautiful landscapes of this country. As for now, I’ve only visited Oslo and had some hikes in the area around Bø. Very beautiful experiences which I recommend vividly.

I recommend people to come to USN, and especially campus Bø, as they will have the opportunity to study in a calm and friendly environment, followed by capable teachers and surrounded by amazing nature sights and amazing friends.

If anyone wishes to have more details, you can find me on Instagram (leonardo_piovanelli) or by email (leonardo.piova00@gmail.com).

Come to USN and have a great time!
