Erling is a sociologist with a degree in sociology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and a degree in social science data analysis from Essex University. He has research experience from fields of research such as social inequalities in health, immigrant integration and class analysis, and he has previously taught courses on quantitative methods at Helsinki University and NTNU, and sociology and quantitative methods at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. He is course responsible for two thematic courses in the bachelor program in sociology, and one thematic course and a course about quantitative methods for the master program Master in social analysis.
