EDUCATION

2016                University teaching, basic competence (10 ECTS), University College of Southeast Norway

2016                PhD: Disputation date: 02.05.2016. Title of the dissertation: When Places are Made: Four Studies of the Visual Rhetoric of Place Development. Faculty of Humanities/Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo, Norway. Supervisor: Professor Jan Svennevig. Second supervisor: Professor Jan Grue.

The main objective of the thesis is to achieve a better understanding of how places are made rhetorically: in which rhetorical modes of expression, in what ways and with which societal significance? The research object is not the rhetoric of party politics or government but ‘the other rhetoric’ - the rhetoric that affirms cultures and creates communities, conserves and develops values, and which is pedagogical and formative. The dissertation makes a contribution to the discipline of rhetorics by conceptualising the rhetoric of place; by developing a method of topos analysis of visual rhetoric; and by suggesting a rhetorical field method. Furthermore, the dissertation offers the field of text research with a proposition for how thematic text complexes can be constructed and analysed, as well with a way of regarding contexts and rhetorical situations through polycentric perspectives.
