Why study Micro- and Nano Systems Technology?

Micro- and Nano Systems Technology is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field that involves the design, fabrication, and application of devices and systems with dimensions in the micrometer and nanometer range. These technologies have revolutionized many fields including healthcare, telecommunications, energy, and environment. Micro and nano technology has the potential to address global challenges and to help develop efficient renewable energy sources, improve water quality, and provide better and affordable healthcare solutions.

What you will learn

The science of miniaturization requires interdiciplinarity and for this reason, the courses offered includes electronics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, mathematics, modelling and processing. You can learn how smart miniature components are designed, manufactured and characterized and how they play together in a complete system. We emphasize learning how to apply theoretical knowledge to solve practical tasks, and many of our courses include project work. The courses you can choose between can give you broad knowledge or specialized skills.

The teaching will take place in English when international students participate in these courses.

Why study at USN?

USN and department of Microsystems has the last two decades built up a strong and dynamic research environment and education offer within micro and nano technology. Located at campus Vestfold, you find state-of-art laboratories and cleanroom facilities that are one of the cornerstones in the national effort in micro and nanotechnology (NorFab). The collaboration with business life in the region is solid, and several micro- and nanotechnology companies have established themselves close to campus in recent years.

We offer an informal and student friendly environment. Our campuses are small with an open-door policy where our staff dedicates time and attention to each student. We offer a safe living and study environment as well as a multicultural society where English is widely spoken. Our programmes are focused on practical study methods with a problem-based approach that should help students to prepare for real-life situations.

Further studies

Graduates with a Master of Science degree in technology, electronics, bioelectronics or equivalent with average grade B or better are well qualified for further doctoral degree (PhD) in Technology at USN.
