How to apply for student exchange?

Exchange opportunities for USN students 

Submit your application 

Students who wish to apply for exchange to one of USN’s partner institutions abroad, must submit the application through our electronic application form, Søknadsweb. The application form is only available in the application period (mid December to February 1st / early August to September 15th.).

Please note: as an exchange student, you do not have to upload any requested documents in step 4. This is because we share the same application module with Section for admission, therefore not all the information in Søknadsweb will be equally relevant to you.

Start early with the preparation for exchange. Read up on the agreement and the university you are interested in. Are there any language requirements? What courses are offered at the host university?

What happens after I submitted my application?

1. Nomination

After the application deadline, the International Office at USN will assess your application and clarify whether you will be nominated to the partner university or not. Within six weeks, you will have received the following:

Either a confirmation that you are nominated as an exchange student to the partner university, and at the same time receive supplementary information on how to complete your application

Or, if you do not meet the criteria for your first choice (you can list up to three universities in order of priority), your second and third choices may be considered.

2. Pre approval using a Learning agreement

The Learning Agerement (or Online Learning Agreement) is an agreement about prior recognition of courses between you as a student and USN. It is a prerequisite for exchange to receive recognition in your degree for the educational components successfully completed abroad, so that stay abroad would not lead to delay in your studies.   

3. Application to the partner institution

When you have been nominated to the partner university and have received your nomination letter, you can start preparing your application to the partner institution. It is your responsibility to read the information you receive from USN, and follow the instructions given in the nomination email.

Application deadlines:

  • 1 February starting autumn semester
  • 15 September starting spring semester*

Please note: practical arrangements such as applying for a loan from Lånekassen, visa, houising and insurance, can wait until you have been admitted to the partner institution. In some cases, you will need to apply for housing at the same time as applying for admission. You will get more information if this applies to you.

* Health and social care students have only one deadline: February 1st.
