The main focus of our research is self-formation (paideia, Bildung) and wisdom (phronesis/prudence, sophia/logos/spirituality) in education, and how they can be fostered by means of diverse pedagogical approaches.

Focus

The main focus of our research is self-formation (paideia, Bildung) and wisdom (phronesis/prudence, sophia/logos/spirituality) in education, and how they can be fostered by means of diverse pedagogical approaches. These include, but are not limited to, dialogical, contemplative and philosophical practices. Annually we organize an international DIALOGOS workshop on pedagogical philosophical practice.

Methods

Our research methods a mainly dialogue-oriented. They include reflective practice research and exemplary case studies, strangification, Socratic research interview and dialogical action research.

Disciplines

We are employing an interdisciplinary approach covering the disciplines of pedagogy, ethics, psychology, history of ideas, philosophy of science, literature studies and philosophical practice. Our members are active and well-known contributors in the international community of philosophical practice.

Networks and partners

We collaborate with several networks and universities worldwide. These include the University of Vienna (Austria), Savitribai Phule Pune University (India), the University of Sevilla (Spain), The University of Chicago, (USA), University of Jyväskylä (Finland), Montclair State University (USA), National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Norwegian Society for Philosophical Practice, The Finnish Philosophical Practice Network, the Italian Society for Philosophical Counseling, Philosophish Politische Akademie (PPA), Society for the furtherance of critical philosophy (SFCP),The European Society for Wisdom Research, The Yoga Institute (India).

Ongoing projects

  • Philosophizing the Dialogos Way Towards Wisdom in Education: A project about how the activity of philosophizing can promote a person’s development towards wisdom, and how this activity can be integrated into the (higher) education system.
  • The Edifying Turn: An epistemological project about philosophical practice as an educational practice. It represents a work of foundational research within the field of philosophical practice.
