Why study Energy and Environmental Technology?

Do you want to learn how to produce clean energy without harming the planet? Are you interested in technology used for reducing gas and water pollution? Would you like to learn how to estimate the costs of implementing such technology and thereby to create a more sustainable development?

A master's degree in Energy and Environmental Technology will give you the opportunity to explore this field, ranging from planning and controlling industrial processes, to knowledge of how we can prevent environmental threats and explore environmentally friendly energy sources, both through the use of experimental equipment and via advanced modelling and simulation tools.

Where can I work?

Environmental issues impacts society and the demand for clean energy sources increases.

With a master's degree in energy and environmental technology, you will be qualified to work within process safety and impact assessment, design and operation of cleaning processes as well as production, administration and distribution of energy. You will work within the public and private sector as well as research institutions dealing with safety and analyses concerning the environment and energy issues.

Working with the local business community

The local business community will be involved throughout this programme, for example through guest speakers from our partnering institutions and through visits to relevant companies.

We do extensive research and work closely with our industrial partners. The majority of the student projects in our programme are done in partnership with external companies.

USN offers career days on campus every year with visits from relevant local businesses. In addition, several of our partners offer summer jobs to students.

Gain international experience

You can take parts of the master programme in Energy and Environmental Technology abroad. To study or take an internship abroad can give you the opportunity to expand your international skills and adaptability. It can make you more attractive in the labour market. USN has exchange programs with universities around the world that makes it possible for you as a student to travel abroad.

Semester exchange to USN

Within this programme there are several exchange opportunities for students from our partner universities. Please contact our program administrator for details and course lists. The application deadline for exchange is May 1st for the autumn semester and November 1st for the spring semester. 

Further studies

The master's degree is eligible for doctoral studies at the University of Southeast Norway or at other universities and colleges in Norway and abroad.

Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical or environmental engineering (other programs may also be accepted)

  • Mathematics at the level of Mathematics III (at USN), or the equivalent

  • Passed a bachelor course in Thermodynamics (minimum 5 credits)

  • Passed a bachelor course in Fluid Mechanics (minimum 5 credits) 

  • Special English requirements

  • A cumulative grade point average equivalent to, or better than, a C in the ECTS system (we will do the grade conversion)
