Hognestad is full professor of education (Ph.D.), and an active researcher in the ECE field. Hognestad also teaches at USN/HUI at both bachelor's, master's and Ph.D level in ECE teacher education. She is a member of the board for the national research school NORBARN. In her PhD from NTNU, Hognestad has focused on pedagogical leadership and has been concerned with teacher leaders' knowledge management as practice in the ECE settings. Her master’s degree focus on the youngest children in kindergarten, the one-year-olds. Hognestad has long working experience from ECE settings both as director, teacher and, as a start, as an assistant.
