Why study Engineering courses in Porsgrunn?

Campus Porsgrunn has a strong engineering environment within several fields. Our engineering programmes, both at bachelor and master level, are developed in collaboration with local industry and are designed to meet the need for future competence.

We have good laboratory facilities and a well established collaboration with industries that focus on research and development. We emphasize learning how to apply theoretical knowledge to solve practical tasks, and many of our courses include project work.

We work closely with the industry in our area and our student projects and master's theses often come directly from our partners.

The industry in Norway has a continuing need for new engineers with knowledge within all the professional directions offered at campus Porsgrunn.

What you will learn

Porsgrunn offers four professional directions within the field of engineering at master level.

Electrical Power Engineering

The subjects in this exchange programme will provide a solid base on how electrical power systems are constructed and operated. The necessary design requirements for equipment and quality control (voltage quality) of the general energy supply are included in the studies.

Central topics of the programme deal with control technology to ensure safe operations of a power system and to deliver the required quality of power supply. The academic content is balanced to allow the candidates to work on both operating and rehabilitating/renewing existing systems, as well as developing Smart Grid and similar solutions so that business can run in a “socially responsible way”.

Energy and Environmental Technology

Courses within Energy and Environmental Technology will give you the opportunity to explore this field, ranging from planning and controlling industrial processes, to knowledge of how we can prevent environmental threats and explore environmentally friendly energy sources, both through the use of experimental equipment and via advanced modelling and simulation tools.

You have the opportunity to learn about:

  • Water cleaning
  • Gas cleaning
  • Alternative energy systems
  • Heat and mass transfer
  • Applied thermodynamics
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Process safety
  • Process synthesis
  • Process control
  • Project management
  • Cost estimation
  • Research
Industrial IT and Automation

You can get knowledge in monitoring, control and optimization of all types of technical and industrial systems based on cybernetic methods and computer engineering.

You have the opportunity to learn:

  • Sensors and measurement systems
  • Data analysis
  • Computer program design and programming
  • System design
  • Automation systems
  • Mathematical modelling and simulation
  • Control algorithms
  • Advanced control, including model-based predictive control (MPC)
  • Electrical Machines
Process Technology

You can get insight into the design of process plants, knowledge about industrial flow processes, applied thermodynamics, process synthesis and separation technology.

If meeting the prerequisites in the courses at campus Porsgrunn, international students can combine courses within the professional directions listed in the study modell.

The teaching will take place in English when international students participate in these courses.

Why study at USN?

We offer an informal and student friendly environment. Our campuses are small with an open-door policy where our staff dedicates time and attention to each student. USN offers a safe living and study environment as well as a multicultural society where English is widely spoken. Our programmes are focused on practical study methods with a problem-based approach that should help students to prepare for real-life situations.

Further study opportunities

The graduate students will achieve a sound foundation for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at USN or at other universities anywhere in the world.

Study Plan

A study plan describes the content, structure and organization of a study programme. To each study plan there is a set of course plans that describe the different courses. In the course plan you will also find a reading list. Below you will find a study model that shows you which courses that are taught in each term. In the study model you'll also find links to each course plan.

Admission requirements

The admission requirement is a Bachelor Degree relevant for the programme you wish to apply for. The Transcript of Records for the completed bachelor should be uploaded in the application process. Admission to the programme requires a good command of the English language, both spoken and written. An English proficiency equivalent to B2 (Cambridge) level is recommended. Applicants should have a cumulative grade point average equivalent to, or better than, a C in the ECTS system.

The programme is open to international exchange students studying at one of USN's bilateral partner institutions, who are officially nominated by their home university.

Exchange students at Master's level must hold a Bachelor diploma in engineering or equivalent and should have completed at least 1 semester (at Master's level) at their home institution before they enroll at USN. The students must have at least 25 ECTS in mathematics and 5 ECTS in statistics. Normally there is a requirement of a C average for admission at Master level.

Special admission requirements:

  • Electrical Power Engineering
    • a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Power Engineering

    • a bachelor course in Electrical Circuits at minimum 10 ECTS credits, bachelor course in Control Engineering at minimum 5 ECTS credits and a bachelor course in Electrical Machines/Power Systems at minimum 10 ECTS credits

  • Industrial IT and Automation
    • The programme requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics engineering or Computer Science. In addition you must have passed the following:

    • A bachelor course in Programming Language at minimum 5 ECTS credits and a bachelor course in Electro/Electronics (knowledge about resistors, capacitors, inductors and transistors) at minimum 5 ECTS credits

  • Energy and Environmental Technology / Process Technology
    • Requires a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, process engineering or mechanical engineering. Related programs (such as environmental engineering, energy technology, renewable energy, or civil engineering) may also be accepted provided that the applicant can demonstrate at least 5 ECTS of thermodynamics and 5 ECTS of fluid mechanics either as separate courses or integrated in other courses.

Please note:

  • Some engineering courses might have requirements for  prerequisites knowledge. Please make sure that you check the course descriptions and fulfil the given prerequisites before you apply for admission.
  • Students can only choose modules from one campus.
