According to DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook 2024, petroleum will be a large contributor to the energy supply for the years to come, and there is an urgent need to improve oil and gas recovery to meet the current and future energy demands.

Oil and gas utilization is, in the URGENT perspective, part of the problem but also a necessary part of the solution to achieve an efficient transition to carbon neutrality. Storing captured CO2 in oil reservoirs is an example of a concept that will reduce the climate impact of oil production. Besides, obtaining safe, better, and increased CO2 storage is a necessary element in our carbon storage studies.

The core of our research activities is reservoir technology studies relevant to low-impact production, carbon utilization and storage, and environmentally sound handling of waste (e.g., drill cuttings). We cooperate closely with the petroleum industry, and several master's and PhD candidates have collaborated with local companies in their research works.
