Software and data play an integrating role within and between systems, determining functionality and performance of the system (of systems) capabilities. Despite this crucial role of software for system behavior and performance, most organizations experience a troublesome relation between systems and software. During this KSEE we will explore this relation, the causes of the difficult relation, and opportunities for improvement.

Speakers

Dirk-Jan Swagerman, Chief on demand Innovation & Systems at Buffadoo

Having seen the full spectrum of system & software development, from embedded in complex systems, web applications and image processing involving AI algorithms, Dirk-Jan Swagerman understands that software is both an asset and a debt. As an independent consultant, he helps businesses transform legacy code, improve agility and train teams in systems & software architecture & integration.

Title of Keynote: Better together: how system- and software engineers can cooperate to innovate faster

Dirk-Jan Swagerman

Richard Doornbos, Senior Research Fellow at Embedded Systems Innovation by TNO

Richard conducts applied research on systems architecting methods for complex high-tech systems. He currently investigates how to apply model-based systems architecting and systems engineering techniques in multidisciplinary architecting teams, with a focus on reference architectures, system modeling, and aspects such as architecting skills, tool support, and team cooperation.

Title: Understanding the interface between systems engineering and software engineering

Richard Doornbos

Kjell Bengtsson, Vice President – Jotne

Kjell has a Mechanical Engineering background and a diploma in Marketing. He started out at Volvo Car and General Electric doing CAD/DB applications and later management positions and is now VP at Jotne EPM Technology. Kjell also manage the Jotne extensive R&D portfolio at EU (Horizon and EDF) and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Title: The Digital Twin and the need of open, public available and international standards.

Kjell Bengtsson

Karen V. Czachorowski, Digital/Data Product Manager at Aker BP

Karen has over a decade of experience in various supply chain roles across different industries, with a particular focus on the oil and gas sector. Since 2018, she has been leading supply chain improvement and digital transformation projects.

Title: Future trends and innovations in software for E&P and the challenges in software and data integration during system development.

Karen V. Czachorowski

Martin Törngren, Professor in Embedded Control Systems at KTH

He has particular interest in Cyber-Physical Systems, architectural design, system safety, model based engineering, and co-design of control applications and embedded systems. He has authored/co-authored more than 150 peer reviewed publications. He is the director of the TECoSA Swedish national competence center on Trustworthy Edge Computing Systems and Applications.

Title of Keynote: Towards an era of smart life cycle connected cyber-physical systems - What are the implications for SE, or … when is an Automated Vehicle ready to go?

Martin Törngren

David Cameron, Head of External Engagements, UiO

This presentation will present the challenges in managing engineering information from complex process facilities. There have been many efforts made to standardize and support interoperability of this data. Here I will present a perspective on the current state of play and prospects for improvement. We will look at current work on system modelling inspired by systems engineering and see how these models can interact with simulation and digital twins.

Title: The challenges of software for process systems engineering.

David Cameron

Tobias Hylleseth, Student speaker, USN-SE

Tobias works as a Customer Success and Project Manager at Digitread Connect. He has a computer engineering background and a master’s in Systems Engineering at USN. He started developing Industrial IoT applications, moved on to sales for a year, and slowly transitioned towards facilitating workshops to improve the accuracy of the development projects. He is a firm believer in iterative development, with continuous feedback from key stakeholders. Currently working on a framework that lets companies utilize their process data to decrease carbon emissions and automate emission reporting.

Title: A case study on emission analysis and accounting in the waste management industry.

Tobias Hylleseth

Gerrit Muller, USN-SE

Gerrit Muller worked from 1980 until 1999 in the industry at Philips Healthcare and ASML. Since 1999, he has worked in research at Philips Research, the Embedded Systems Institute, and TNO in Eindhoven. He received his doctorate in 2004. In January 2008, he became a full professor of systems engineering at University of South-Eastern Norway in Kongsberg (USN), Norway. He continues to work at TNO in a part-time position. Since 2020, he is INCOSE Fellow and Excellent Educator at USN.

Abtract: Today's systems depend heavily on software and data. Despite the central role that software and data play in realizing the system behavior and performance, many organizations suffer from a difficult relationship between systems engineers and software and data engineers. What is causing this difficult relationship? .
