Content

This course includes critical perspectives of the theoretical and empirical basis for the understanding of a variety of concepts for the person, health and society including, (1) the persons’ subjective experiences of health, health challenges and health services (person), (2) the biological, psychological, social, material, and existential factors determining health and (3) the societal prerequisites for health and welfare. This course explores the relationships between person, health and society. It focuses on how professional knowledge and culture create understandings of health and welfare and how these contribute to shaping research, practices, and services. How professionals have a significant, critical function in realizing equity and health within the conditions that shape the institutions of the welfare state and society will be illuminated.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following competences:

Knowledge:

  • Can critically assess different theories, positions, debates and arguments concerning the understanding of and relationships between person, health and society.
  • Can critically assess prerequisites for health and welfare.

Skills:

  • has ability to contextualize the PhD project in theories of person, health and society.

General competences:

  • has an overview of theories and associations between person, health and society, including an understanding of their relevance to health-, social- and welfare research.
  • can discuss multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives in health-, social- and welfare research.

Admission requirements: Enrollement in PhD programme and/or equivalent qualifications. Internal and external applicants are welcome. 

Work requirements:

The PhD candidate must submit a summary of their PhD work (1-2 pages) before attending the first block of the course. At the first block, the candidate will present their PhD work and participate in small reflective groups receiving and providing peer feedback on the PhD work. Before the second block, the candidate must draft an essay for the final assessment discussing a chosen aspect of the course (person, health or society) concerning their PhD work. At the second block, the candidate will discuss in reflective groups the drafted essays. Graded as pass/fail.

Compulsory activity and compulsory attendance

The group work and seminars are mandatory.
