Applying for a job at USN

As a governmental institution we have guidelines ensuring all candidates are treated equally and fairly in the recruitment process. We strive to get the best fit for each position and hope you will consider your possibilities at USN.

Scientific positions

It is import to notice that the hireing process in Norway is quite long. This is the hiring process for scientific positions:

Submit your application

All vacant positions at USN are announced via the internet portal Jobbnorge. Submit your application via jobbnorge.no by clicking on “Apply for this job” and following the electronic application process.

Remember to read the announcement text carefully so that you include everything the application must contain. USN only accepts applications submitted via Jobbnorge. Applications received by e-mail or other channels will not be considered. All applications received will be processed after the deadline for applications has passed. Applicants will receive confirmation that their application has been received.

Interview

When the assessment is complete the best qualified applicants will be invited to an interview. For some positions we might need to have several interviews. Trial lectures are often held as a next step for positions that involve teaching duties. Please note that the Norwegian interview process might be different than what you are used to. Normally USN will have three people in the first round, the hiring manager, an HR representative and a union representative. We want you to show your merits, but also be aware of your areas of improvement. Most interviews of foreign candidates will be held on a digital platform, but if you are living close to one of our campuses a physical interview could also be an option.

After the interview you will be asked to provide some references. Here you will normally give contact information to a former leader or a colleague. Remember to inform your references that they might be contacted by USN regarding your application.

Nomination – approved by the Appointment Board

The candidates are ranked based on an overall assessment, which takes into consideration the applications, interview, trial lecture and reference checks. The applicants can be informed about the ranking. The nomination is presented to the Appointment Board for approval. The Appointment Board normally has meetings once a month.

Offer

An offer of employment is sent to the candidate nominated for the position. When the position has been filled, all the applicants will receive notice.

PhD candidate

For PhD research fellows' employment and admission to the PhD programme are two separate processes. After you have accepted the offer of employment, you will have to apply for admission to the PhD programme the position has been announced as part of within three months of accession. Admission to the mentioned PhD programme is a premise for employment. For more information about PhD programmes, please visit our Research website.

Diversity

According to our human resources policy, it is our aim that our employees, to the fullest extent possible, shall reflect the diversity of the general population. We therefore encourage all qualified candidates to apply for the post. We endeavour to further develop as an inclusive workplace and to adapt your workplace if required. You are also welcome to apply for a position with us if you have experienced periods where you have not been in employment, education or training.

Appointments are made pursuant to the provisions of the Act relating to state employees, etc. and the Act relating to universities and university colleges, the current rules and conditions that apply to civil servants and guidelines at USN.

Any personal data disclosed is processed pursuant to the provisions of the Personal Data Act. For a public position in Norway the names of the applicant are public if requested. This is to ensure a transparent process and to make sure candidates are fairly treated. Applicants can request to be omitted from the public list of applicants. However, the university can still decide that the name of the applicant should be published. In such cases, the applicant will be notified prior to publication.
