Guidelines for use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in exams and student assignments

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool for students when used correctly. You may utilise AI for mandatory assignments and exams where all aids are permitted, as long as you describe where and how AI was used. This page provides information on the rules that apply to USN students.

These guidelines are intended to help you understand what is allowed and what is not, enabling you to use AI responsibly and safely. The guidelines apply to all written assignments you submit in all courses, including bachelor's, master's, and research project assignments.

It is your responsibility to check whether the course coordinator has provided specific rules regarding the use of AI in each course. For exams, permitted aids and their use are described on the exam cover sheet.

Main Rules for Using AI

Unless otherwise determined by the course coordinator, the following main rules apply:

1. You are responsible

for all content you submit, regardless of whether you used AI or not. AI should support, not replace, your understanding, knowledge, and skills. Use AI as a tool, not as a substitute for your own writing, reading, and thinking. Your submissions must be your own work and demonstrate your knowledge.

2. Do not use AI-generated text directly

in your answers or assignments. Exceptions may apply if you are explicitly demonstrating what an AI tool produces. In such cases, AI-generated text must be clearly marked.

3. Be critical

AI-generated text may contain errors, omissions, or misleading information. Always verify the content against reliable sources and critically evaluate the information, message, and phrasing of AI-generated text. Be particularly cautious, as chatbots may produce fabricated or irrelevant sources. If you use generative AI for literature searches and creating citations, you must carefully ensure the quality of the results. Check Kildekompasset.no to see how the citations should be formatted.

4. Be transparent

if you use AI. Describe where and how you have used AI and specify which AI tools you have used. If you use AI in a larger written assignment (e.g., semester papers, bachelor's, master's, or research project assignments), you should include a more detailed explanation of how AI was used and how it influenced your work.

5. Be aware of privacy

You must never input sensitive information, personal data, confidential details, or copyrighted material into open AI tools. USN recommends using Sikt KI-chat that ensure privacy and data security.

What Can You Use AI For?

AI can support various parts of your work, including:

1. Discussion Partner

Use AI to suggest problem statements, explore and develop themes, ideas, arguments, and perspectives for discussion.

2. Structuring text

Get help creating outlines, organising content, and structuring your text.

3. Review Literature

AI is not, in itself, an academic source and should not be included in the reference list. However, you must describe how AI was used for literature review.

4. Working with Literature

AI tools can help you explore texts and suggest additional literature. However, literature searches should not rely solely on AI.

5. Proofreading and Language Editing

Use AI to refine your text, but remember that AI can make errors or suggest unusual or incorrect wording. Always ensure the quality of the final text. USN recommends not directly using AI-edited text but instead using it as a basis for revising your own writing. The text must remain your own.

6. Translation

AI can assist in translating text to or from other languages. Be diligent in verifying the accuracy of the translation.

What Is Not Allowed?

1. Submitting AI-generated work as your own

It is not permissible to submit entirely or partially AI-generated text without clearly marking it in the text and explaining how it was used. Remember, you must be the author of the text you submit.

2. Falsifying information

It is prohibited to use AI to generate or disseminate false information, such as asking AI to create sources for your written work.

3. Failing to document AI use

All use of AI must be documented. If you use text, images, code, or other content generated by AI, you must specify and describe it (e.g., the prompt used).

4. Privacy violations

Do not input personal data (e.g., names, addresses), confidential information, company details, copyrighted material, or sensitive content into AI. USN recommends using Sikt KI-chat, as this tool is developed for universities and university colleges and prioritises privacy and data security.

References to AI

When using AI, you must describe:

  • which tool you used (e.g., Sikt KI-chat or ChatGPT)
  • what you used it for (e.g., suggestions for structure, language editing, translation)
  • how you processed the results
  • how the use of AI influenced the process and outcome

Create a dedicated section in your assignment, for example under the heading “Use of Artificial Intelligence,” or include it as a footnote. You can also attach the chat response as an appendix to your assignment.

Kildekompasset (Source Compass) has provided recommendations on how to cite AI-generated texts. "Søk og Skriv" (Search and Write) is also a useful resource.

Examples of Citing AI

Here are some examples of how to cite AI, depending on the type of assignment and how you used the AI tool

  1. Use of AI has become an integral part of my work process. I used Sikt KI-chat as a kind of discussion partner during a period when my work came to a standstill. It helped me verify my understanding of academic concepts, such as thematic analysis, suggested relevant academic books and appropriate theories, and provided guidance on potential next steps. When starting the discussion section, I wanted to ensure that there was a connection between my findings and the theories I had chosen, or determine the best order to present them. I had to be mindful of how I formulated my questions, as it appeared possible to "prompt" the answer you wanted depending on the phrasing. I never used text directly from Sikt KI-chat in my assignment but was inspired by the connections it suggested, as in the examples mentioned.
  2. I used the language model Sikt KI-chat to create a draft for my bachelor's thesis. I used Sikt KI-chat to suggest topics, problem statements, hypotheses, and research questions for the paper. I did not use Sikt KI-chat to write entire sections or chapters, only to generate suggestions that I reviewed and refined myself.
  3. I used Sikt KI-chat for a literature search for my bachelor's thesis. Sikt KI-chat generated relevant search strings and suggested literature, which I used as a basis for further searches in other relevant databases.
  4. In this assignment, I used the language model Sikt KI-chat to identify and correct grammatical errors, improve sentence structure, and suggest synonyms to avoid repetition. I did not use Sikt KI-chat to write entire sections or chapters, only to refine my own text.

What Can Happen If You Do Not Follow the Rules?

Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in you being suspected of academic misconduct (cheating), which can have serious consequences:

  1. Anulment of mandatory assignments or exams (counts as a fail).
  2. Suspension from USN for up to two years.
  3. Loss of the right to take exams at all other universities and university colleges for up to two years.

Want to Know More?

USN offers training and support for students who wish to learn how to use AI tools responsibly:

  • Course coordinators can provide information about what applies to specific courses.
  • The Unit for Digitalisation and Educational Quality (eDU) has its own AI resources.

The guidelines are effective from 11th August 2025, and are updated regularly in line with technological developments and changes in laws and regulations.
