Why study Sustainability Management?

Persons in managerial positions, who have to deal with issues relating to economic, environmental, social and cultural sustainability are often met with challenges that are complex, important and exciting.

Sustainable solutions offers tools that are increasingly in demand in a number of areas. New guidelines and methods for enhancing sustainability are constantly under development. While there are major challenges to solve, they also bring new opportunities for innovation and progress.

This Master programme provides research-based knowledge, practical skills and competencies that will allow you to work independently and judiciously with such challenges.

The Master of Sustainability Management prepares future managers and researchers for the task of dealing with problems and challenges related to management, regulation and certification of sustainable practices. This requires a strong link between sustainable practice and research within a number of fields.

The study programme provides access to advanced, interdisciplinary knowledge, creative thinking skills and decisive competencies for sustainability management in the private, public and non-profit sectors, both at home and abroad.

The study programme takes place on campus Bø, which is known for its active student life.

What you will learn

The Master programme in Sustainability Management is a two year 120 ECTS programme that bridges two main knowledge fields: management and sustainability. Students can specialize in areas such as finance, innovation and strategy, digitalization and marketing and tourism focusing on sustainable development both locally and globally.

All our courses are delivered in English, offering students diverse learning methods to enhance participation and collaboration. Lectures and tutoring provide structured guidance, while group work and seminars encourage teamwork and knowledge sharing. Study tips are designed to provide hands-on experiences that inspire innovative solutions to the real-world challenges. Students contribue significantly through independent study, complimenting collaborative efforts.

The programme is organized based on a study plan that runs two courses parallel for half a semester. This means that each course usually runs for 7 weeks, with a week of exams after each course. This evens the workload over the academic year and gives students the opportunity to concentrate on the topics and tasks.

Exams are usually organized in week 9 and week 41, as well as in the ordinary exam periods at the end of each semester (May and December).

Final assessments are based on a variety of tasks, such as term papers, group work, oral presentations, and final individual written examinations. The grade scale is from A-F, where E is the lowest passing grade.

Career prospects

The Master of Sustainability Management programme opens a wide range of career opportunities for you. Graduates can pursue roles such as change managers, analysts, consultants or professionals itnegrating sustainability knowledge into their existing workplaces. The programmeprovides pathways to careers in the public, private, and non-profit sector, where there is a growing demand for project leaders equipped with both management skills and sustainability expertise, both within Norway and internationally.

The Master programme can also open opportunities for research training in a range of academic fields within management and sustainability studies, such as a PhD programme in management.
