Financing and student visa

Non-EU students must document that they can finance their stay in Norway, and apply for a student visa.

Financing and student visa

International students must document their ability to finance their stay in Norway in order to be granted a residence permit for study purposes. If you are from outside EU/EEA and admitted to a program, you need a visa/study permit. The application for study permit requires a fee (5400 NOK in 2024).

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration requires that citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA-area and Switzerland provide documentation of financial ability, i.e. a minimum amount of money required to cover living expenses for one academic year in Norway. To acquire a student visa you must transfer an amount of 151 690 NOK (2024 figure) to USN's residence permit account (details to come in March). If you have a Norwegian bank account, you can transfer the funds to your own account. These funds are meant to cover living expenses for one year, and the amount is checked by immigration before a student visa is granted to you. This comes in addition to our tuition fees.

In some cases we are asked if an applicant can bring his/her spouse. Please note that it is your own responsibility to prepare if you decide to bring your family members with you. USN has no responsibility nor capacity for organising family visas, police registration, housing, schools or kindergartens to accommodate family members.

Application process

You apply through the online application portal Søknadsweb as an international applicant. You can only have one application and you can only apply for one course.  

 

You need to have your documentation ready to upload when you apply. We want documents to be uploaded by 7 days if possible, but it must be uploaded within the application deadline at the latest.
 

Please read the application receipt once you've applied. This receipt has your application number, which you will need if you contact us, and other important information.
 

The results will be visible in USN's application portal, and you will be notified when they appear. If you are offered admission, you will be given a short deadline to respond.

If you do not receive an offer of admission, you can ask for the reasoning behind the decision and appeal for your application to be reconsidered.

Insurance

All students must have a valid insurance.

Insurance

USN strongly emphasizes that it is the student's own responsibility to make insurance arrangements for any accident, illness, injury, loss or damage to persons or property resulting from, or in any way connected with, the study period in Norway.

In addition to health insurance (see below), all students must have a valid travel insurance for the duration of their stay, including the travel to and from Norway.
