Arve Olsen

Keynote title: Light < Experience

Sponsored by: Light Bureau

Keynote Description: Embark on a transformative journey from inclusive real-world projects to sanctuaries of darkness, designed to elevate the human experience..

About Arve Olsen

Since joining Light Bureau in 2009, Arve has played a crucial role in the firm’s projects across Europe and the Middle East. His extensive portfolio features the design of lighting masterplans for unique locations such as Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost settlement with over 1,000 residents, and the skillful illumination of Grade I and II listed heritage buildings at the Royal Academy of Arts and King’s College in London. As a designer, Arve combines focus and rationality with a strong conceptual approach, transforming lighting from a mere tool into a powerful medium that enhances the narrative and character of architectural spaces. His user-centric design philosophy ensures that lighting solutions are tailored to meet the specific needs and desires of the occupants. Recently, his projects have emphasized community engagement and the revitalization of public spaces through urban regeneration, often exploring how minimal lighting can significantly improve the nighttime experience of a space, thus promoting sustainability.

Beyond his endeavors for Light Bureau, Arve is actively involved in education. He frequently serves as a guest lecturer and mentor, has been a jury member for the Norwegian Lighting Awards, and is the former head of the Norwegian Lighting Designers Association.

About Hillevi Hempälä, PhD

Hillevi is a senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor at Design Sciences, Lund University. Hillevi started as an optometrist and realized that her patients got headaches from incorrect lighting. She then studied lighting design and then got her PhD in the field of Visual Ergonomics at Lund University. She performs studies in the field of glare, flicker/Temporal Light Modulation, visual ergonomics, and integrative lighting. She is the Swedish representative in the CIE Division 6 (Photobiology and Photochemistry) and co-chair in the technical committee of Visual Ergonomics within the International Ergonomics Association.

Keynote description: The 90% Challenge: Redefining The Indoors "We've become indoor creatures, spending 90% of our lives within walls. It's time we design these spaces with the same biological consideration we give to zoo enclosures and reconnect with our past.”

About Xander Cadisch

Xander is the founder of "Light Tribe", an outfit that works with neuroscientists and designers to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the built environment. He holds the role of Sustainability Director and Chief Technical Officer at Phos light and has recently published a book on the neuroscience of light and biophilic design titled “The Light Within Us’. Passionate about the power of light and positive design, he presents his work to education institutes, government bodies and design practices, around the world with the aim of positively affecting the habitats in which humans being spend 90% of their time (indoors).

Irene MAzzei

Irene Mazzei

Keynote description: Rationalising environmental assessment for lighting Understand more about Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Product Declarations and other sustainability assessments that are currently applied to lighting, including the opportunities and challenges associated with them.

About Irene Mazzei

Irene received her PhD in Chemistry from Durham University in 2022, after completing her BSc and MSc in Materials Science. The projects she’s worked on were always motivated by sustainability, particularly focusing on studying sustainable alternatives to conventional industrial processes. She is strongly motivated by the need to implement practical solutions to boost sustainability and recognises the importance of sharing knowledge within the industry and promoting collaborative efforts. She worked for 2 years as Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate with Edinburgh Napier University and Stoane Lighting on a project funded by Innovate UK and focused on the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), to understand the environmental impacts of lighting. To do so, she has been working in direct contact with Stoane Lighting, lighting designers and the wider lighting community, assessing the impacts of products and processes using LCA and other methodologies. In 2023, she was Technical Lead in the working group focused on the creation of a lighting-dedicated version of CIBSE TM65 embodied carbon assessment methodology – TM65.2. Since 2024 she is working as Stoane Lighting’s Sustainability Lead and is also directly involved in initiatives looking at improving the harmonisation of LCA practices in the lighting industry.
