A substance-free learning and working environment

At USN, we are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and substance-free learning and working environment for all.

Misuse of alcohol and other substances reduces the ability to learn and work, and increases the risk of personal injury, harassment, sexual harassment, health damage, and addiction. Therefore, it is not permitted to attend any study-related activities under the influence of substances. Study-related activities include lectures, exams, placements, and group work. Being hungover or smelling of alcohol in study-related contexts may be considered being under the influence.

There is zero tolerance for the use of illegal substances.

Students receiving medical treatment that might lead to suspicion of substance influence are advised to inform the university to avoid misunderstandings.

Consequences

A student who attends lectures or other study-related activities under the influence may be immediately dismissed from lectures, exams, placements, and other campus areas, cf. the University and University College Act section 12-5 first subsection. Repeated behaviour may lead to dismissal for up to one year, cf. the second subsection.

Violent behaviour may result in police intervention and a police report.

In programmes subject to suitability assessments [NO], the rules on suitability assessment and related actions will be considered.

Guidelines on Alcohol Consumption for Students

The purpose of the guidelines is to ensure a safe and inclusive student environment at USN. The guidelines are based on the alcohol legislation and aim to clarify how the alcohol legislation applies at USN.

The guidelines are intended to create predictability regarding alcohol consumption for students at USN and ensure the preservation of USN's reputation.

The points in the bullet list below apply to USN campuses, including all premises and outdoor areas associated with the campuses.

  • It is not permitted to serve or consume alcohol at USN before 4:00 pm.
  • Students are not allowed to consume alcohol at USN without a licence as per the alcohol legislation section 8-9.
  • Bringing your own alcohol is not allowed.
  • USN units may serve small quantities of alcohol at closed events without a licence. Students cannot organise such events.
  • Student associations may apply for a licence and hold events with alcohol service on campus at USN. Approval requires, among other things, that the event complies with the alcohol legislation and that no brought-in alcohol is consumed.
  • Outdoor alcohol service may be permitted within a confined/marked area if a licence is obtained.
  • Security personnel may remove students consuming alcohol on campus where there is no permission or licence.
  • USN has a zero tolerance policy for illegal drugs.

Alcohol Service and Relevant Regulations

  • To obtain a licence, applications must be made through the municipal pages of the respective campus.
  • For a licence for an event open to the public, in premises without a licence, or outdoors in a confined area, applications are also made through the municipal pages.
  • The landowner must be contacted if permissions are needed on their land
  • See alcohol legislation section 8-9 for relevant exceptions to the licensing requirements.
