Adaptation in the study situation

Who can apply for adaptations?

If you have visual impairment, hearing loss, mobility problems, dyslexia, psychosocial difficulties or other challenges in your daily studies, you can apply for adaptations. It is required that the disability or special need is documented and causes a significant disadvantage in your daily studies.

Who gets approved adaptations?

adaptations are assessed based on your documented needs, academic requirements, and what is practical and pedagogically feasible.

adaptations in daily studies should, where possible, compensate for the disadvantages caused by the disability or special need. The adaptations cannot lead to a reduction in the academic requirements set in the course.

What if I need adaptations already at the start of my studies?

If you need adaptations from the start of your studies, it is important that you contact your study advisor as soon as possible. Contact information for study advisors can be found on the course offer page of the programme you have applied for.

Examples of adaptation measures in the study situation

Physical adaptations

Students who need physical adaptations due to reduced functional ability or special needs can apply for this via the adaptation application form.

You can apply for assistive devices yourself via NAV Assistive Technology Centre in your home county. NAV Assistive Technology Centre can also come to the university for further assessment and discussion.

Reduced study progress

If you need more time to complete your studies, with a reduced workload each semester, you can apply to take your studies over a longer period. For example, spend 4 years completing a 3-year bachelor's degree.

Leave of absence

The right to leave of absence is regulated in the Regulations on Studies and Examinations at the University of Southeastern Norway, § 4-4.

To be able to apply for leave of absence, you must:

  • have been registered as a student in the study programme for at least one semester
  • be admitted to a study programme (students admitted to single subjects cannot be granted leave)
  • not be on a study abroad placement that is an integrated part of the study programme

You apply for leave of absence via the application form on min.usn.no. The form will be available once you have activated your user account at USN.

Adaptations during exams

Do you need adaptations for your exam?

You can submit a separate application for this once you have become an active student.

Applications for adaptations during exams are handled by the Examination Section, at your campus.

The application deadlines are 15 September for the autumn semester and 15 February for the spring semester. The deadline is early in the semester, so it is advisable to apply well in advance and ensure you have the necessary documentation of your need for adaptations during exams.

Documentation needed when applying for special examination arragements

Your needs for adaptations must be described, and measures must be recommended in the documentation you attach.

These points must be answered in the documentation from a doctor/specialist:

  1. A brief description of the illness/disability/diagnosis.
  2. Is the illness/disability permanent?
  3. Does the illness/disability cause specific problems during exams? If so, which ones?
  4. What measures does the doctor/specialist believe are necessary for the student to be able to complete the exam?
Examples of special examination arrangements
  • Extended time
  • Dictionary, if you have another mother tongue
  • Spelling and correction software, beyond simple spell check
  • Room adaptations
