How and where classes are offered.
Expected progress of study. Full time is programmes with full progress of study (60 ECTS credits per academic year, 30 ECTS credits per semester). Part time is programmes with less than full progress of study (less than 60 ECTS credits per academic year, or less than 30 ECTS credits per semester).
Master in Sensor Systems and Innovation provides you with advanced skills in sensor technology to address challenges in health, marine, and environmental monitoring. The programme is ideal for recent graduates and professionals seeking specialization, and it promotes innovation in a rapidly growing field.
You will learn to design, develop, and implement smart sensors and systems that interact with their surroundings. Sensor systems have a wide range of applications, including health, welfare, environmental monitoring, smart cities, communication, energy systems, maritime industry, autonomous vehicles, and more.
Through the programme, you will have the opportunity to explore new technologies and applications for sensor systems. This may involve developing new sensor solutions, finding new ways to use existing sensors, or creating innovative systems and technologies that leverage the full potential of sensors.
The curriculum also covers how sensors can be effectively integrated with other technologies and systems to address real-world challenges. The programme’s focus on innovation aims to inspire you to develop new solutions and create added value based on your technological expertise.
In their master’s thesis, students specialize in a self-chosen area within sensor systems. Examples can include designing and testing a new sensor, or using software to collect and analyse data from an existing sensor.

The application deadlines are May 1st for the autumn semester and November 1st for the spring semester.
Sensor systems are crucial for many technology companies, such as those in maritime technology, medical technology, process industry, and many others. Some companies develop their own sensors, while others create systems that collect and analyse data from existing sensors. With a master’s degree in Sensor Systems and Innovation, you will be attractive for a career in these companies. You will also have a solid foundation for a further career at a university or research institution, as well as for pursuing a PhD.

Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to visit local electronics and sensor technology companies. Additionally, industry experts will deliver guest lectures on selected subjects.
We work closely with companies and research institutions regionally, nationally, and internationally. The academic environment of the study programme is highly active in research, and master’s theses are often linked to research projects or carried out in collaboration with a company.
The strong connection to the industry and the networking opportunities mean that many of our students receive offers for part-time jobs during their studies.
We have our own student association, “Volt,” which works to create an inclusive student environment among engineering and technology students at USN campus Vestfold. The association organizes social activities, seminars, and workshops, and builds bridges to the business world through company visits and career days. Here, there are great opportunities to network and prepare for future careers.
Graduates from the programme with average grade B or better are well qualified for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at USN and other universities elsewhere in the world.
You can take parts of your study programme abroad. Studying, doing the master project or doing an internship in another country gives you the opportunity to expand your international competence, language skills, personal qualities and adaptability. This can also make you more attractive in the job market. We have agreements with international universities, colleges and internships institutions adapted to your studies.
