Biosensor Technology

Biosensors can detect biological and chemical compounds. In medicine, for example, they can be used to analyse a blood sample by detecting biological molecules such as proteins, enzymes, or DNA. They are also used in environmental monitoring and food safety, where they can check for environmental toxins or bacteria and viruses. In this study programme specialisation, students learn to design and use modern biosensors, and how the signals can be interpreted and used to detect both desired and undesired substances in biological samples.

In their master’s thesis, students specialize in a self-chosen area within sensor systems. Examples can include designing and testing a new sensor, or using software to collect and analyse data from an existing sensor.

The application deadlines are May 1st for the autumn semester and November 1st for the spring semester.

Working with the local business community

Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to visit local electronics and sensor technology companies. Additionally, industry experts will deliver guest lectures on selected subjects.

We work closely with companies and research institutions regionally, nationally, and internationally. The academic environment of the study programme is highly active in research, and master’s theses are often linked to research projects or carried out in collaboration with a company.

The strong connection to the industry and the networking opportunities mean that many of our students receive offers for part-time jobs during their studies.

Volt

We have our own student association, “Volt,” which works to create an inclusive student environment among engineering and technology students at USN campus Vestfold. The association organizes social activities, seminars, and workshops, and builds bridges to the business world through company visits and career days. Here, there are great opportunities to network and prepare for future careers.

Further studies

Graduates from the programme with average grade B or better are well qualified for further doctoral degree studies (PhD) at USN and other universities elsewhere in the world.

Special considerations

It is recommended to have at least 5 ECTS in Electrical Circuits. Applicants lacking this will have the opportunity to take an electric circuits course in the first semester.

Admission requirements

This programme requires a completed and passed bachelor's degree in engineering, natural sciences, or equivalent. Other natural science and/or technological bachelor's degrees may also qualify, provided they include at least 20 credits in mathematics and/or statistics or physics.

Export control

This programme may be covered by the regulations on export control. Export controls are applied to countries where there is suspicion about development and use of weapons of mass destruction. USN may therefore decide to conduct a specific evaluation of these applicants. As it is under discussion, we do not have more information at present.
