Cyber physical systems can be defined as an extension to embedded systems, in that a Cyber Physical System is typically designed as a network of interacting elements with physical input and output instead of as standalone devices.
Smart systems are much the same in that it can be defined as miniaturized devices that incorporate functions of sensing, actuation and control, but with the addition that they behave in a in a semi-autonomous operation, with a human actor expressing a desire for a specific outcome. Such systems are typically capable of describing and analysing a situation, and taking decisions based on the available data in a predictive or adaptive manner, thereby performing smart actions.
In most cases the “smartness” of the system can be attributed to autonomous operation based on closed loop control, energy efficiency and networking capabilities.
In a number of important areas, particularly EU research, the use of the term “Embedded systems” is being superseded by the term “Smart Systems”. From our perspective, Smart Systems is focused on real world systems and can be divided into areas of:
- Technology (micro and nano systems)
- Software (to be run on the technology)
The research group wants to be focused on two main application areas, initially:
- Serious Games for Effective Industrial Automation (Simulation & visualisation) where we replicate the real world for various purposes, such as training, planning etc.
- Building Real World Systems (e.g HEFAESTUS – packages of sensors, drone swarms to establish perimeter monitoring)
- Data modelling

We want to bring the research group to the attention of some of the key local industrial organisations, such as Kongsberg Group, with a view to attracting some sponsorship and research projects.
We also like to develop a strategy for proposal development and funding, looking to optimise existing links nationally and in EU, and to develop some targeted links further afield, in the US and Australia amongst others.
