DHP: Research Data Management Plan – Quality System for Health Research

All research projects at USN must be equipped with a dedicated Data Management Plan (DMP).

Helseikon

What are research data?

Research data is a broad term that includes all types of records, sources, or reports systematically collected in a research project. This can include survey responses, audio, video, transcripts, algorithms, or software. Analyses, questionnaires, and interview guides are also considered research data. For more on research data, see Open Science’s introduction to research data management.

For student projects, a description of data use in the notification form to Sikt and the use of USN’s specific storage solutions will usually suffice. However, if the project involves large volumes of data, sensitive personal data, or health information, it may also be necessary or appropriate to complete a full Data Management Plan.

For research projects, a Data Management Plan is required. This plan outlines how research data related to a specific project will be handled, both during and after the project. It typically includes a description of the types of data involved. Ideally, the plan should be created before the project begins and should describe how data will be managed throughout the different phases of the project.

Research data must be made available in accordance with USN’s Open Research Policy. This policy follows EU and Norwegian government principles that research data should be as open as possible – as closed as necessary. In other words, not all research data must be shared, but efforts should be made to share data where possible.

It is important to have a plan for the use of research data early in the project, as you must inform participants about how their data will be used in the consent form, information sheet, and research protocol.

USN Research Data Archive (USN RDA)

USN RDA is our institutional repository for archiving and sharing research data. Data that can be shared openly is archived here, possibly with embargo or access restrictions. If the data contains sensitive information or cannot be shared openly for other reasons, we offer solutions for that as well. For example, metadata can be shared to describe the datasets collected.

Questions about the Quality Assurance System for Health Research?

The Department of Research, Innovation, and Library Services manages the Quality Assurance System for Health Research at USN. The quality assurance system is reviewed and updated as needed. If you have suggestions for improvements or notice that content is missing, feel free to report it to forskningsetikk@usn.no. We will reply to your email.
