Jan-Michael Johansen fullførte sin PhD i idrettsfysiologi våren 2021 og jobber nå som post doctor på et eksternt finansiert forskningsprosjekt. Prosjektet undersøker bruk av fysisk aktivitet i læringsprosesser i barne- og ungdomsskole, og hvilken effekt dette har på læringsklima, klassemiljø og aktivitetsnivå. PhD-arbeidet omhandlet effekten av trening, alder, kjønn og gener på prestasjonsutvikling i langrenn. Jan Michael er for tiden også medarbeider i flere forskningsprosjekter på prestasjon i langrenn og løping, og fysisk aktivitet og helse, samt hovedansvarlig for idrettsfysiologisk testlaboratorium.
