Dr. Osman Urper's research interests have evolved through his academic and professional journey, beginning with his Master's research, where he investigated the use of single-walled carbon nanotubes as electrode materials in organic solar cells, aiming to enhance their electrical properties and performance. During his Ph.D., he focused on developing doped ZnO nanomaterials with enhanced optoelectronic properties to improve their application as electrodes in energy devices. Currently, as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of South-Eastern Norway, his work involves the modification and characterization of biochar-modified nanocomposites for environmental applications, specifically targeting air and water disinfection and enhancing photocatalytic and antibacterial properties through innovative techniques.

I, Dr. Osman Urper, am a researcher specializing in materials science and nanotechnology. My professional journey is highlighted by significant contributions to the development and characterization of advanced materials for energy and environmental applications. My expertise notably encompasses the use of nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes and doped zinc oxide, to enhance the performance of solar cells and other optoelectronic devices.

Currently, in my postdoctoral research at the University of South-Eastern Norway, I am focused on the innovative use of biochar-modified nanocomposites. This work aims to improve photocatalytic activities for air and water disinfection and to provide antibacterial solutions. My multifaceted research efforts are driven by a commitment to sustainable development and technological advancement. Through my work, I strive to push the boundaries of material science and address critical environmental challenges, integrating scientific inquiry with practical applications.

Responsibilities: As a project team member, I am primarily responsible for modifying biochar with various effective metal oxides and conducting post-treatment. Additionally, I characterize the nanostructural properties of the samples using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FTIR, and Photoluminescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, I investigate the photocatalytic degradation properties of the samples. My role encompasses the following key tasks and objectives:

  • Sample Production: Modify bare biochar using various methods and formulations post-treatment. Investigate the photocatalytic performance of the modified and composite samples under UV and solar light. About their efficiency, deliver the samples to other partners to investigate their antibacterial activities.
  • Sample Preparation and Handling: To prepare samples for XRD, SEM, and FTIR analysis, ensuring proper handling and preservation of their structural integrity. I collaborate with the team to acquire and process samples for characterization.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: To acquire data using XRD, SEM, and FTIR equipment, ensuring accurate and high-quality imaging. To analyze the nanostructural data to identify grain boundaries, defects, phases, and other relevant features.
  • Comparison and Evaluation: To compare the performance data from the analyzed samples to existing reference data.
  • Photodegradation:  To provide structural insights to interpret activity performance testing results. To collaborate with colleagues involved in antibacterial and degradation to correlate efficiency features with degradation and antibacterial properties.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed reports summarizing activity findings, experimental procedures, and results. To document the analysis process, methodologies, and outcomes for future reference and publication.
  • Collaboration and Communication: To maintain open communication with team members, sharing insights, challenges, and progress updates. To collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds to integrate structural and application potential into the larger project goals.
